Chapter 26- Alliance

(Empress)

We’ve secured the pass for nearly a week now. My mate is strong enough to stand again, and we finally have a visitor. One of the great dragon1dragonspeciess appeared. Word hadn’t reached them that we were even here. It makes me fear for the ones that left to inform the others. It took almost a full day to convince him that we weren’t tricking him either. Perhaps, what sealed the deal was my mate. The aura of the world that came from him was recognized by the great one. I also find it strangely attractive more than normal. The other females are the same. I’m not exactly sure why, but after Loren, my mate straight up told me that he only wanted to be with me. Not because he didn’t want to be with them, but more about the fear of what I would do to them if I had to watch it again. I will consider it when we breed again, but back to point. The great one, Grrarr, appeared before me and my mate. We talked about what has happened so far, and what are future plans are. In truth, Grrarr is a wise old dragon. He has been looking for a successor to his vast lands and hoard for a long time. Jordan, the young dragon we saved, so happens to be a blood relative of his. A direct descendant. He also agreed to what we did to the others. Once the mind is lost, so is all of their hope. He stayed for nearly a week to help support our war on the humans and listen to our plans. With this, our path is more secure than ever before.

From the time that we captured the pass to now, a month has passed. Nearly a third of the humans in the north have been subdued. Half the people have been sent out to cultivate the land or defend them. Winter has also arrived. To the north, that only means it’s slightly colder and the days are shorter, but to the south, that means there’s snow. Nothing truly changed with the exception of our population increasing. We’re even starting to enforce and create laws, create an educational system, and devise currency and tax. Many of which aren’t going to be implemented until after every human in the north is dead. The stones of the fallen fortress walls are being turned into homes for the needy. The fields are starting to hint at their first yields too. Right now, my mate was explaining what we will soon do to Jordan. Even though he sees fear when looking at my mate, he remains calm and feels no ill intent from him. In truth, I’m slightly scared of my mate as well. I’m a fine fighter, but my mate is scary strong with world magic5magicstory mechanic. On top of that, he is both a clever and a tactical genius.

If not for the fact that he isn’t physically strong, he would be the perfect man. After explaining our plans in detail about our rebellion from before, now, and the future to Jordan, he nodded in understanding.

‘In order for the humans to take down a tribe of dragons, half of a whole generation has to be lost to them. It’s a staggering amount that the dragons can’t recover from, even with a lot of breeding. The riches to the humans are vast enough to harbor their lust of greed.’

Jordan closed his eyes in thought from his own remark. Greed isn’t a bad thing though. You need it in order to not be taken advantage of. Desiring a little extra in order to have a future is a given thing. I looked at my mate, and he scratched his own head in response.

‘I’ve never really been one to want that many material things.’ (Emperor)

Those words shocked me. Heroes were known to be hoarders, even more so than dragons. I couldn’t help but laugh after he said that. I looked at them while smiling, causing them to be confused. No wonder he ran away. My mate never wanted to be a hero. That in turn turned him into a true hero in my heart. I then grabbed his hand happily.

(Emperor’s Diary)

There’s a lot of land in the north. The summers are hot, but the winters are mild. The terrain is mountains and valleys with plains as far as the eye can see. There is also rivers a few lakes, forests, and even hot springs. Most dragons don’t care about the waterways or the plains, so we don’t think the dragons would mind if we claim them for the empire. To the west is a port city that was made by the humans for faster transport of goods, but was burnt down by the dragons and abandoned. If we can get trade routes to the southern kingdom of the beastkin, that’ll make our sustainability last longer. There’s a lot to do, as the infrastructure of the empire is still frail, but the bare bones of it have the solid makings of a good structure.

These are the type of things I’ve been talking to Jordan about. After talking to him about these kinds of things, I can easily see how easy it is for a dragon to be a leader. Their mental capacity is far larger than mine. He listens to me as if I’m a sage and he’s my disciple. H***, at this point, that comment may be true. I’m not good at the finer things of commanding armies, I leave that to my love. For actual combat planning, I have no equal in our whole group of leaders. I make plans upon plans, and strategy upon strategies. I already have plans for the basic structure of the empire. Some of the laws are in effect even now. Still, I have that quest to found an empire. Not that I’m impatient either, it’s just that I want a little security for our futures.

At dawn, me and my love were awoken in a hurry. What we feared the most has come to pass. A human army of over one hundred and fifty thousand people appeared from the south and immediately started a blockade to prevent us from using merchants greedy for the former slavers gold. At the same time, the remaining army of fifty thousand of those capable in the north started a siege as well. The timing is too perfect, so I asked some of our best magic users that use communication type magic to look for traces of signals between the north and the south. That didn’t matter much, as we were caught at a bad time. We had just sent out the majority of our remaining food to the settlements. That leaves us with three choices. 1. Attack the north and hold the south. 2. Hold the north and attack the south. 3. Try to hold each direction.

If it comes to a long term siege, we can’t last though. We have no reinforcements and no supplies. We haven’t consolidated the alliance with the dragons yet either. I closed my eyes as everyone is voicing their worry broadly. To the north or to south? The north has several dozen heroes and human generals that are battle hardened and fairly experienced. They’re also desperate. We’ve them trapped in a corner. To the south, they outnumber us about eight to one, not including the people we’ve sent to defend the north with. It’s even worse odds actually, but that wall was made to hold against thirty, or even fifty to one odds. The south will also have slaves. I doubt they would forget the backbone of their military strategy. The south also won’t be death soldiers, or people that are highly experienced, the defenses there are also weaker. It’s an obvious choice to make. We attack the south….

{Narrator}

The alliance between dragons and the empire, and later the beastkins, would last most of the duration of the ancient era. With a sea trade route between the empire and the beastkin nation being the only way of communication and trade, their relationship had been mostly neutral at best until the collapse of the human race. As the dragons were their neighbors, and eventually first class citizens of the empire, they chose to rarely go on the offensive against the humans. This allowed them to focus more on advancements in magic, medicine, and technology over the whims of heros and other worldly knowledge. Still, as the founder of the empire was a hero as well, a library of secrets was left to the greatest minds of the empire. These books listed many technologies and weapon descriptions. This is so future generations know what to be cautious of from other human heroes and other humans in general.
