Chapter 2960 Put Away Your Arrogance

Colonel Amitab straightened his spine, his eyes scanned the foreign generals who stood out to defend China, and intended to embarrass him and his country, he sneered: “What can a single individual’s impressiveness represent anything? A country, an army, an individual’s strength is just like a drop in the Indian Ocean, Sirs. Do you all think a drop of water ...

I finally (sadly) caught up with the latest batch of chapters I’d not read yet. It reminded me again that while I thoroughly hate Gu Fangzi, I can’t help but feel sympathetic towards her plight in some ways. Sure her ways and methods of achieving her goals are ruthless and worthy of granting her the title of “Grand Bitch”. However she is stuck in an awful spot as well.

Especially after her father dies, after seeing her “beloved” (quotation marks since I honestly don’t think she ever saw her cousin as anything other than a nice meal ticket that came with a nice roof over her head) veer more and more towards Sang Wan. Who knows what his feelings will be towards her in three years after her mourning period is over? For all she knows he won’t even remember her at all, and then she’ll be stuck in a rut with no one to care for her.

It’s quite refreshing to have such a well thought-out villain that, despite all her flaws, has her reasons for doing what she does beyond loving the male lead. It also helps that the story is (so far, fingers crossed) set outside of the more natural habitat for this type of story, in the middle of a battle for who will become the next Emperor. The Shi family is rich, for sure, but they aren’t nobles (unless I am misremembering something from the early chapters). And Gu Fangzi is not your typical villain in these types of stories, that has the backing of major families that can keep them safe and sound despite whatever crazy scheme they come up with. It also means that her situation is more desperate since she lacks that support, she has NOTHING to fall back on beyond her ties with the Shi family (even Sang Wan has at least her brothers and sister-in-law to rely on). And then some random nobody comes and basically steals what she had thought was her natural spot for the majority of her life. All of that compounds to make for Gu Fangzi, to me, a more believable, intriguing and interesting villain that I can (to a certain extent) sympathize with.

Anyway, that became quite the TL;DR. Ahem. Thanks as always for the translations!
