108. First Encounter

“That conniving little bitch!” Emily hissed. She sat up abruptly. Her icy blue eyes glared at the dark room, her arms waving in the air, “Did she even think about what she did? Was she that desperate? Gold digging is a habit that doesn’t go away, huh? It’s not like Logan wouldn’t inherit anything… or did she want the power of the Parkers? To get back at you someday? UGH, she frustrates me.”

Alex reached to rub her cousin’s back. She could see Emily’s shoulders rise up and down while panting.

Her blonde hair swayed behind Emily, “And you saw her today? If that headmistress wasn’t so strict, I would have strangled her already months back.”

“Oh, yeah. She said something about Freccia Prep.”

Emily snorted, “She transferred ever since she became part of the Conary Family who is at our level of influence.”

Then, she glanced at her cousin over her shoulder, “You think she’d seduce Neal?”

Alex made a face.

“It’s not like they’re real siblings!”

“Can we not go there?” She cringed.

“Fine” Emily huffed, shifting her legs so she’d face Alex’s direction. She also crossed her arms over her chest, “Even after all this time, I still can’t believe what that bitch did to you.”

A young girl with honey brown hair stepped out of a black car. She wore a light blue dress that reached her knees and strapped on a backpack. Her black flat shoes clacked a bit against the pavement. Her gray eyes swept up the place before her.

The building was small and so was the campus in front of it. Several children ran around playing with each. Some adults stood by chatting.

They all seemed to be waiting for something

“Young miss, are you ready?” Their family butler, Jeffrey, asked with a bow.

Alexandra took a deep breath, nodding her head. It was a new school. She didn’t know anyone here, right? Or at least, they didn’t know her? Could she really start a new life and gain friends?

“Right this way, miss.”

“Oh, hi!” A voice greeted from their right.

The young miss turned her head towards. It was another girl. She looked like she belonged among Alexandra’s dolls back home—except she had more casual clothes, a green shirt and a pair of shorts. Her shiny black hair swayed behind the girl as she ran. Her round black eyes sparkled at the sight of the young miss.

Once she caught up to them, she panted.

“Are you alright?” Alexandra tilted her head.

“I am, I am!” The girl said. Then, she beamed, “Are you a transfer here? So am I! I’m Skye, by the way.”

She held a hand, offering a handshake.

On reflex, the young miss took it. Ah, well, she might as well introduce herself too, “I’m Alexandra.”

Skye frowned, “You have a long name.”

“Others call me by Alex.”

“No, no, no. Your nickname has to be unique. How about ‘Xandra’?”

“Okay.”

The school bell rang. Everyone outside started to gather around. Parents reminded their kids to behave. Kids bid goodbye to their parents. Some students already bolted towards the entrance of the building.

“Have fun today, young miss” the butler smiled. It seemed like luck was on their side. Another student already approached the young miss.

“Thank you, Jeffrey” Alexandra smiled back.

Skye held her arm and led her to the school. The young miss took one last look over her shoulder, waving a hand at the butler.

During lunch, the students had permission to use the backyard. It had several tables surrounding the center. A part of it had been cemented to include a small basketball court for the children to play with in their spare time.

Alexandra chose a table near a tree. She welcomed the shade and the coor air. She placed her lunchbox on the table. Today, she had an apple, a bottle of orange juice, a few sandwiches and a piece of chocolate.

She gasped, grabbing the chocolate. Jeffrey must have snuck it in. She silently thanked her butler. He probably gave in case she needed a cheer up.

From the corner of her eye, she saw Skye with a few girls walk around the backyard. Alexandra quickly refocused on her lunch. Just because the girl introduced herself to her didn’t mean she’d join the young miss for lunch.

Taking a bite off the chicken sandwich, another lunchbox clatterer on the table.

“Hey!” Skye smiled and opened up her box, “Wow, you must be hungry, huh? That’s a lot of food. I usually just have two sandwiches and a juice box.”

Alexandre couldn’t help her curiosity. She peeked at the girl’s lunch. True enough, the young miss had twice as much food—even the juice box looked to be half of the bottle she had.

Both of them ate quietly. After one sandwich, Alexandra picked up the apple. Halfway through it, Skye spoke again.

“Those ham sandwiches tasted so good. Although I’m still hungry, at least, I had a good lunch” she sipped on her juice box and waited for Alexandra to finish.

The young miss didn’t find it comfortable. She had been used to the maids watching her but school had been the exception. It felt weird to be watched here.

Alexandra pushed her lunchbox towards the girl, “Please take some. I’m afraid I’m almost full and can’t eat more.”

Their household did overdo her lunch sometimes. Since they’d scold her if she didn’t finish, she resorted to giving it away—if anyone wanted it. She’d sneak up to the fence around her old school and peek if there were any beggars nearby. Sadly, she didn’t see one most of the time and threw away the food.

It wasn’t her fault she felt nauseated if she ate too much for her liking.

Skye raised her eyebrows, “Are you sure?”

“Yes” Alexandra nodded, “It’s chicken though.”

“Okay then!” The girl squealed and took a sandwich, “Wow, chicken also tastes good.”

For every sandwich Skye finished eating, she’d ask the young miss’s permission for another. Alexandra approved of it each time. Then, she took out her chocolate.

“You have chocolate?” Skye exclaimed, “You are so lucky. I usually don’t get any chocolate because it gives cavities.”

The young miss pressed her lips together. She also wasn’t allowed to have much sweets. This had been a surprise for her. One hand on each side, she bent the chocolate until it snapped in half.

“Have this one” Alexandra mumbled. She held out one piece towards the girl.

“Really?!” Skye gasped. When the young miss nodded her head, she took the chocolate and bit, “This tastes delicious. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted it before.”

“It’s rare to find it in stores here.”

“Wow” the girl remarked, licking the chocolate off her fingers, “I’m honored to taste it at least once.”

The rest of the day quickly passed by. Soon enough, Alexandra came out of the building and immediately spotted Jeffrey and the black car. She walked straight to it.

“How was your first day, young miss?” The butler greeted her. He had high hopes.

Alexandra merely nodded, “It was okay.”

Just then, a voice yelled from behind her, “Xandra! See you tomorrow!”

The young miss whirled her head. Skye was running again. This time she waved a hand over at Alexandra before heading off down the pavement. The young miss watched her disappear off the corner at the end of it. She wondered why the girl was alone. Did she happen to live nearby?

“Young miss?” Alexandra heard Jeffrey call her.

She shifted her attention to the butler and said, “Let’s go home.”
