4. Defending A Dungeon

I played Strategy games similar to this so I tried to apply the same principles.

I started to arrange my troops into a formation that would increase the likelihood of winning. I put 3 golems in the front of the formation while 2 were sent to the back. I placed the Goblins and slimes in the second row, with the elementals spirits being in the third row. Confident with this logical formation, I opened the double-doors of the dungeon.

It seems that the first enemies we would encounter would be magic-dominant dire wolves. They were a pack of 5, with 4 of the smaller dire wolves being fire-types. However, the leader of the pack had some type of dark magic aura around him, as well as casually being 10 feet tall.

“Oi. What the hell is this? 10-foot dire wolves? Really? Is this a sick joke, Orai?”, I said.

“This is the God Of War we are talking about, Jordan. Do you really think he wants to spawn dungeons in beginner-friendly areas? This is how he sorts out the weak from the strong. If he spawned us here, he must have felt that we were smart enough to utilize 200 DP wisely. Then again, he can be an asshole at times”, Orai said casually.

As the dire wolves got closer, the troops began running towards the entrance. The water-type and Electric-type elementals that I bought were rapidly launching ranged attacks against the wolves, which seemed to be less effective the farther away the target was.

“That’s not a bad amount of range. I’ll have to use elementals more in the future! The goblins on the other hand…”

The goblins seemed to be less intelligent than the slimes, as they charged in front of the golems only to be killed seconds later. I essentially lost 50 DP points in a matter of seconds.

“What a waste! Can they not follow orders? What do they think the golems were for? Decorations?”, I said.

“Goblins are mainly used for dungeon battles, Jordan. It’s the fact that they don’t follow orders is what makes them perfect for setting off traps. All they want to do is get to the core, which makes them a troop mostly for rushing”, Orai said.

“Shouldn’t you have told me that before I bought them?”, I said.

“I never saw it in person so I wanted to see if the data was true! It’s not like it’s that big of a deal. What would 5 goblins realistically do against Dire wolves, Jordan? Beat them to death with those tiny clubs? You may be cute but you need to think at a larger scale whenever you purchase mobs”, Orai said.

Damn. She got me good! Imagine spending 50 points on goblins! Probably wasn’t the best call in hindsight.

“At least the slimes are doing well. Guess my hunch was right about their abilities”, I said.

The dire wolves were at the entrance of the dungeon, shooting their magic attacks at the golems. Dark magic, as well as Fire magic, was being thrown against the golems on the front lines. Luckily, my hunch was right about the slimes being resistant to magic so I had the slimes become armor for two of the golems. I told them to become armor for the golems if the enemies were magic-types. If the enemies were physical-types, the slimes would become sticky traps to slow the enemies. In hindsight, I could’ve spent the extra DP from the goblins to purchase more slimes but what’s done is done.

Anyway, the elementals were the true key to this formation since they were the primary attackers. The two golems at the back of the formation were assigned to protect the elementals for as long as possible. Elementals were capable of decent damage spells if they were given enough time to charge their attacks.

“Watch this Orai! This battle is over! I can feel it in our core!”, I said excitedly.

Once the elementals were finished charging their attacks, the water-type attacked first. It used a water trap spell in order to entrap the wolves in place. With enough casting buildup, the spell was able to inflict the ‘crippled’ status effect onto the enemies! One-by-one, the dire wolves howled as their hind legs were being snapped. The only beast that was unable to be broken by the strength of the effect was the pack leader.

“Jordan! What do we do about the pack leader! He seems to be more resistant than the other dire wolves. Do you have a plan?”, Orai said.

“Don’t worry! That’s what the other elemental is for!”, I said confidently.

The electric elemental summoned a large, dark cloud over the pack of dire wolves. As the soaked dire wolves struggled to escape with their broken hind legs, the elemental shocked them with a large lightning bolt! The wolves howled as they were being shocked to death, before finally dying and being absorbed into the dungeon floor. All were defeated except the Dark-type dire wolf that was barely standing.

“Ok Golems! Beat his ass and save the Dungeon!”, I said happily.

The 2 golems covered in the slime armor ran up to the Dire wolf and began to inflict damage! As they kept slamming, punching, and stomping on the dire wolf, I saw a notification pop up on the dungeon control screen:
———————–
‘Do You Want To Capture [Dark-Type] Dire Wolf? Its current Class is [B+]’.
———————–

“Hell yeah! How is that even a question! Do it before the golems kill him!”, I said excitedly.

The heavily injured Dire Wolf began to glow bright blue before eventually teleporting into the dungeon’s system. I guessed that the other monsters sensed the Dire Wolf’s passing, as the red dots on the map began to move away from the Dungeon.

“S***! I almost thought we were gonna die! What the hell was that?” , I said sighing.

I spread my arms and legs before laying on my back. Orai copied me and did the same.

“Hahaha! I’ll give you props, Dungeon Master. You’re smarter than you look!”, Orai said smiling.

We both started to laugh at her observation as a notification came up on the Control Room’s screen.
———————–
‘The Domestication of [Dire Wolf] has been completed. Please Summon At Earliest Convenience.’

“Hey, Orai. How do I summon the Dire Wolf?”, I said.

“Oh! Just go to the dungeon’s storage by saying ‘DS’. You can also summon the DP store by saying ‘DP’. If your intent is to go to those places, then it should pop up instantly as a holographic screen”, Orai said yawning.

As Orai started to take a nap, I opened up Storage by saying ‘DS!’ to myself.

On the storage screen, the UI was divided among the categories of items. Upon clicking ‘Mobs’, I saw the following list:
———————–
Current Mobs:

Golems [Deployed]

Electric-Type Elemental [Deployed]

Water-Type Elemental [Deployed]

Slimes [Deployed]

*Dark-Type Dire Wolf [Deploy]———————–
I casually clicked on the ‘Deploy’ button for the Dire Wolf, not expecting it to instantly deploy beside me in its full, 10-foot height. The injuries that it had sustained were essentially gone, most likely due to the dungeon domesticating it. As it began to run in circles around me, I guessed that it was like a really big dog now. Happy to be domesticated, the wolf began to howl loudly in the Dungeon Control Room.

He was quickly kicked out of the Control room by the aggravated Orai.
