Chapter 8 – First Spell

Nick opened his eyes and looked around the room. After confirming that nobody was in the room, he got up from his bed and took a cup of water from the water barrel.

In small sips, Nick drank the water and thought about today’s activities. The reason for his thought he needed some kind of discipline in his mind so that his will and mind not be shaken by any kind of things or events in the future.

“Since it’s midnight now, I must’ve slept for about four or five hours.”

Looking at the darkness outside, Nick concluded.

“I have no time to lose. I should start meditation and train in mana control. At the very least, I need to be strong enough to defend myself.”

With this thought, Nick put his hands on the table,

If he had some paper and a pencil, he could’ve written down his thoughts and theories. Had that been the case, his improvements in a short period would’ve been better.

Unfortunately, Nick did not have something to write on, A paper and pencil sometimes creates too much difference having to write something but not having the means of writing it created a problem in his studies. It is only thing to be expected as he was slave.

In reality, even if he had something to write on, he would’ve most likely chosen not to. He couldn’t risk them being found out by Elena. It is a double-edged sword, he needed to write his studies for better improvement but did not had the materials and even if he had he could not write as the documents he will write could be found out by Elena.

A mere slave jolting down working theories and magic spells would seem like nothing but rebellion to their master.

Nick closed his eyes and started thinking.

“Okay. Let’s try creating a chart inside my head since I can’t write it down.”

Magical Energy or Mana.”

Magic Control or Mana Control.”

As Nick was trying to create mental notes in his mind, a weird thing happened.

Bzzzzzt!

He could feel something like a fly buzzing in his head. The system immediately sent him a warning.

“User can’t use or create Mental Notes! You don’t have enough control over your mana to create Mental Notes. If the User continues to try and create notes using mana, the User may die.”

“Mental Notes needed magical energy to create and needed more magical energy control for the activated and used. User is not at that level yet.”

Nick smiled warily and whispered to himself.

“Damn! This only goes on to show working with magic or even researching it can be dangerous. I have to keep this in mind.”

Nick then stopped creating memory notes, opened his room door, and looked outside. He wanted to see if Elisa or anybody else was on their way to his room. If there is anybody he could not risk being caught trying to use magic or even studying it. It will create too many suspicion on his behalf and it is no good.

Five seconds later, he closed the door after confirming that no one was coming to his room.

Why did he do that? Well, it was because he was planning on inspecting the magical remains now.

He took the magical remains from his pocket and put them on the table. The magical remains on the table taken from the courtyard which mage students casted their spells. They may be unimportant for the mage students or mage but have upmost importance to Nick. The reason for it is simple they are magical and Nick needed everything magical for his studies.

“They are pretty like snowflakes, but with more weight and heavier physical response to them. They do not melt or change shapes. No two magical remains are the same in any aspect.”

Nick looked at the remains and wondered if they were like some sort of emission. Like how bullet casings are discharged from guns after a bullet is shot.

As Nick thought about this, he smiled as he could feel his proficiency in Energy Bolt increasing.

This signified his current assumption about magical remains was correct. However, this minor success wasn’t going to stop him from further deliberation.

“Bullet casings hold the gunpowder. If I draw parallels between them, it will mean that magical remains hold the mana responsible for shooting the Energy Bolt at the target.”

As soon as he thought about that, he felt a sudden rush of power.

By now, he was accustomed to this feeling, so he wasn’t all that impressed.

This feeling meant that his current theory was correct, and his Intelligence stat and spell proficiency was on a rise. Basically, a notice that meant his understanding of this world’s magical system had improved.

Not distracted in the least, Nick continued with his thinking session.

“Bullet cases are hot after they are released from the gun. So, if I follow my current working theory, magical remains should be hot or should show some kind of effect after being released by the caster.”

Nick took a deep breath after finishing his words and brought out his property panel.

[Name]: Nick

[Status]: Level 1 (Imper Level Mage)

[Strength]: 1.0

[Intelligence]: 1.6

[Magical Abilities]

Life Siphon (Proficiency: 10%)

Energy Bolt (Proficiency: 100%) [This spell can now be used with a single thought! For more information about the spell, just think about it.]

Nick gulped and did not know what to say for a few seconds before finally calling out the spell.

“Energy Bolt.”

After Nick thought about the spell, an information panel appeared before his eyes.

Spell: Energy Bolt.

Description: Energy Bolt is a primitive-basic spell that is used by almost all mages. Controlling and using Energy Bolt comes under basic mana control. To use this spell, mages use their mana to form a solid sphere and then use their mana again to shoot the sphere towards their target.

Mana + Mana Manipulation = Energy Bolt or Energy Sphere or Energy Arrow.

High-level mages can use this in almost all shapes, including, but not limited to, the sphere shape.

After Nick read the information about Energy Bolt, he smiled. This all but confirms the accuracy of his theories and thoughts.

Moreover, he could feel that he could use Energy Bolt before the system even confirmed it.

Now that Nick had mastered one spell, he would at least be able to protect himself from threats. However, just this wasn’t enough for a peaceful life in this world.

Unless he could leave this school safe and sound, he was still in danger.

Because of these thoughts, Nick created two plans in his mind.

Since he wasn’t making mental notes using mana, this shouldn’t harm him.

“First, I need to find a way to leave this school and be free.”

“Second, I need to examine this Energy Bolt a bit deeper. I should inspect it until I can use it without the help of its spell.”

Nick knew that the only reason he could even use the spell was that it was listed in the system.

All he had to do was think of the spell, and the system would help him fire it. This meant he didn’t have true control over the spell or the mana used to cast it. In summary, he couldn’t cast Energy Bolt without the help of the system.

His current goal was to cast Energy Bolt without the help of the system or the spell. It wasn’t because he had some fondness for this spell but because he wanted to gain greater control over his mana.
