Chapter 2: A New Reality

As Alex dove into the financial documents his mother provided, he realized just how dire the situation was. The restaurant had been losing money for months, and the cost of his father’s medical treatment had drained almost all of their savings. Alex could feel the weight of responsibility bearing down on him as he pored over spreadsheets, trying to come up with a plan to turn things around.

He spent long hours each day, reading through his business administration textbooks and researching strategies that might help the restaurant. Alex was determined to find a way to save his family’s business and home, but every solution he considered seemed to lead to a dead end.

As he worked tirelessly to come up with a plan, Alex also spent time talking to his parents. He could tell that his father’s condition was deteriorating rapidly, and he felt a sense of urgency to find a solution before it was too late.

Despite his efforts, Alex found himself feeling increasingly overwhelmed and helpless. The weight of the responsibility he felt was immense, and he was struggling to cope with the pressure of trying to save his family’s livelihood. The days blended together as he worked tirelessly to find a solution, and he hardly had time to sleep or eat.

One night, as Alex was finishing up some work, his father called him into his bedroom. Alan looked weak and pale, but he managed to give Alex a small smile.

“I love you, son,” he said. “I’m proud of you, and I know you’ll take care of your mother after I’m gone.”

Alex felt a lump form in his throat, and he struggled to hold back tears. “I will, Dad,” he promised. “I’ll do everything I can.”

The next day, Alan passed away peacefully in his sleep. The following days were a blur of funeral arrangements and family visits, as they all tried to come to terms with their loss. Alex found himself feeling overwhelmed and alone, with the weight of his father’s passing and the future of the restaurant resting on his shoulders.

After his father’s passing, Alex tries to comfort his mother as best as he can, but he feels overwhelmed and alone. He spends most of his time alone in his room, buried in paperwork, working in the restaurant, and avoiding social contacts.

Kaitlyn, his girlfriend, tries to reach out to him, but he pushes her away. He is struggling with his own grief and feels like he cannot burden her with his problems. As a result, Kaitlyn feels shut out and hurt, not understanding why Alex is pulling away.

Alex is also grappling with his emotions and feels like he has lost his sense of purpose. He feels like he has failed his father. The weight of responsibility is heavy, and he is not sure he can handle it.

As the days go by, Alex becomes increasingly isolated and withdrawn. He struggles to find any joy in the things he used to love and finds himself easily irritated and angry at the world. He starts to resent his father for leaving him with such a burden and feels like he has been forced to sacrifice his own life and happiness for the sake of his family.

Despite his inner turmoil, Alex continues to work on a plan to save the restaurant. He spends long hours pouring over spreadsheets and financial reports, talking to staff, and trying to find a way to make the business profitable again. But every solution seems out of reach, and he becomes increasingly frustrated and hopeless.

In his darkest moments, Alex wonders if he made the right decision in dropping out of college to come home. He feels like he has given up everything for a lost cause and wonders if it was all for nothing. But he knows he cannot give up, not yet. He promised his father he would take care of the restaurant and his mother, and he intends to keep that promise no matter what.

Alex decides to go for a walk to clear his head and steps out of the house and takes a deep breath of the cool night air. He starts walking down the familiar streets of Santa Monica, his mind still consumed with thoughts of the restaurant and his family’s future.

As he walks, he passes by a small park and decides to take a detour. He walks over to a bench and sits down, looking up at the stars. He realizes how long it’s been since he’s taken a moment to just breathe and appreciate the simple beauty of life.

As he sits there in silence, he begins to feel a sense of peace wash over him. He knows that things are difficult right now, but he also knows that he has the strength and determination to get through it.

Suddenly, his phone rings, interrupting his peaceful moment. It’s Kaitlyn. He hesitates for a moment before answering, still feeling guilty for how he’s been treating her lately.

“Hey Kaitlyn,” he says, his voice subdued.

“Hey Alex, I’ve been trying to reach you. Are you okay?”

“I’m okay, I guess. It’s been tough, you know, with my dad passing and everything.”

“I know. And I’m here for you, Alex. You don’t have to go through this alone.”

Alex feels a wave of gratitude wash over him. Kaitlyn’s words remind him of the support and love he has in his life, even during the darkest of times.

“Thank you, Kaitlyn. I really appreciate it,” he says, a small smile forming on his lips.

“Of course, Alex. I’m always here for you.”

As they talk a little longer, Alex begins to feel a sense of hope and motivation stirring within him. He realizes that he can’t let his grief and stress consume him forever.

Standing up and taking a deep breath to reset himself, Alex sets off back towards his house.  Out of the corner of his eye in his peripheral vision he thinks that he see’s a bright light.  Looking up he realizes that he wasn’t imagining things, there really is a bright light in the sky and it seems to be getting closer at an astonishing speed.

Alex’s heart pounds in his chest as he watches the light approach. He’s never seen anything like it before. As the light lands behind the building, he can hear a low hum emanating from the source.

As Alex stands frozen, staring at the building behind which, the light just disappeared. He considers turning back and running home, but his curiosity takes over, and he decides to investigate.

He walks towards the alley, cautiously stepping over broken boxes and debris. He can see the light flickering in the distance, and he follows it, turning the corner of the building.

And then he sees it.

A sleek, metallic craft, unlike anything he’s ever seen before. It’s hovering just above the ground, and the light that had caught his attention is emanating from a small opening on the side of the craft.

Alex’s mind races as he tries to make sense of what he’s seeing. Is this some sort of experimental aircraft? A secret government project?

Suddenly, the light flickers again, and Alex feels a strange pull, like something is drawing him towards the craft. He takes a step forward, his hand outstretched towards the light. But just as he’s about to touch it, the light shoots into motion, flying into his forehead with a sudden, blinding flash of light.

As Alex feels the light enter his forehead, he feels a sudden warmth spreading through his head. It’s a strange sensation, unlike anything he’s ever felt before. He tries to pull away, but the light seems to have a grip on him, holding him in place.

As the warmth intensifies, Alex’s vision blurs and he feels disoriented. He can hear a strange humming sound in his ears, and his body feels like it’s vibrating. The sensation is overwhelming, and Alex feels like he’s about to lose consciousness.

Alex suddenly hears a voice inside his head, [Initializing Interdimensional Store System… Please Stand by…]

Alex is stunned by the voice in his head. He blinks a few times, trying to make sense of what’s happening. As he opens his eyes, he realizes that he’s no longer in the alleyway. Instead, he finds himself standing in a strange square room that seems to be made out of some kind of crystalline substance.

The room is bathed in a soft, pulsing light that seems to be coming from the walls themselves. Alex looks around, trying to make sense of his surroundings but very quickly realizes he has no idea where he is or how he got there.

As he takes a step forward, Alex hears the voice again. [Welcome to the Interdimensional Store System. I am your guide, Zara. How may I assist you?]

Alex is dumbfounded. He has no idea what’s going on, but he decides to play along. “Um, hi. My name is Alex. I’m not sure how I got here. Can you tell me where I am?”

[You are currently inside the Interdimensional Store System, a marketplace that connects various dimensions and universes. As a human, you have been granted access to this system by the Overseers.]

Alex’s mind races. This can’t be real. It has to be some kind of hallucination or dream. But the more he looks around, the more convinced he becomes that this is all too real.

“Okay, so what can I do here? Can I buy stuff or something?” Alex asks tentatively.

[Not exactly, the Interdimensional Store System allows the user to connect a store to various dimensions and universes. Seeing as the user Alex Whitford is from the planet designated Earth in the Sol System, products will be made available that will be useful on your current planet.]

Alex’s mind is blown. The idea of connecting to other dimensions and universes is beyond his comprehension. He can’t help but ask, “Can the restaurant that my family owns be used as the store for the system?”

[Yes, it should be possible. The Interdimensional Store System can be connected to any store, as long as it meets certain requirements. The system has the power to transform any appropriate space into an Interdimensional Store.  Transformation time varies on the initial size of the store.]

Alex can hardly believe what he’s hearing. To be completely honest, Alex was never interested in running a restaurant in the first place.  This lack of interest led to him being quite ignorant of the food industry as a whole, let alone fine dining at Whitfords.

If the location of the restaurant could be transformed into an Interdimensional Store he would finally be able to put all the knowledge he’d been learning in college to use. Then he could earn enough money to support his mother, pay off his fathers medical debts, and start to pursue the life that he originally wanted.  With cautious optimism Alex asks, “Zara right? What are the requirements to transform the restaurant into a store?”.

[To give you an accurate answer I must first scan the location.  Please return to the location to be scanned and then we may begin.  Also before I forget, the system has been uploaded into your brain through a complicated process.  To communicate with the system you don’t need to speak out loud, you can just communicate mentally with your thoughts.]

Alex nods in understanding, still trying to process everything that’s happening. He turns to leave the alleyway, but before he does, he hesitates and turns back to the voice in his head.

“Wait, Zara. Is this safe? What are the risks of using this system?” he asks mentally, his inner voice laced with concern.

[The Interdimensional Store System is safe to use as long as it is used properly. However, like any powerful technology, there are risks involved. Improper use or abuse of the system can result in unforeseen consequences, including but not limited to, dimensional instability and even destruction. That is why it is important to follow the rules and guidelines set by the system to ensure safe use. Do you understand, Alex?]

Alex nods, feeling a bit uneasy about the risks involved, but also excited about the possibilities that the system could offer. With a deep breath, he turns and walks out of the alleyway, ready to return to the restaurant and start the scanning process.

As Alex makes his way back to the restaurant, he can’t help but feel a rush of excitement and apprehension. This could be the opportunity he’s been waiting for, but at the same time, he doesn’t want to risk anything that could potentially harm his family’s livelihood.

As he walks through the streets, he can’t help but notice the world around him in a different light. What other secrets could be hiding in plain sight? What other possibilities could exist beyond what he knows? Images of the knights, wizards, and cultivators from his youth flood into his mind.  Things he’d given up on due to impracticality suddenly didn’t seem so impossible anymore.  The possibilities are endless, and Alex can’t wait to explore them.
