We're done with the opening of this volume with this chapter. The little mini-arc involving the sisters and the message delayed getting to this point a bit. Normally it would be the third chapter or so.
I could have avoided the male servants issue by just deciding Egon never had any. But, I feel it would have been unlikely, even in a society that is only moderately patriarchal.
Let me be clear. I do not believe, nor do I think any smart individual believes these days that women wouldn't be capable of taking on the senior roles, even in a society like Pendor, fifteen years prior to story time. This has nothing to do with that. This is about my first hand knowledge in my younger years (the 70s and 80s) of just how stupidly entrenched male chauvinism can be, and how it would have colored the thinking of a smart man like Egon.
You still see it today, of course, but frankly, it's weaker today than back in the day. As frustrating as its continued lingering on, and as stupid as the political moves that it has been inspiring lately, and as much improvement as is still very much needed, it actually is better than back then.
