Chapter 1: Broken Love

“What did you say? Say it again,” Ning Meng Yao stared at the man in front of her with her eyes wide open. Her whole body trembled and her eyes carried disbelief.

Ling Luo looked at Ning Meng Yao’s disbelieving expression and opened his mouth. The words that were at the tip of his tongue had trouble coming out in the end.

The person beside him nudged him gently and he nodded his head again. Determined, he said, “Yao’er, you know my situation. To inherit the position as an heir, I have to marry Xiao Zi Xuan. That’s why…that’s why…”

Ning Meng Yao let out a mournful laugh while looking at Ling Luo who was hesitant and finished the sentence for him, “That’s why you want me to become your concubine?”

Ling Luo immediately shook his head, “No…not as a concubine, but an equal wife.”

“Hahaha, equal wife?” Ning Men Yao staggered backward, her eyes dead set on Ling Luo, “It looks like you don’t know me well enough.”

What kind of person was Ning Meng Yao? Crossing two lives, would she willingly share the person she liked with another woman?

She and Ling Luo were lovers in their previous lives. They were about to get married when they got into an accident and arrived in this unfamiliar era. Here, he was the young master of Lingyun Marquis Residence, receiving care and pamper, while she was an abandoned orphan.

After the accident, he remained good towards her without any care about his status. Loving only each other, she thought the both of them could be the same as how they were in their previous life.

It had been six years since they arrived in this unfamiliar era. She had not changed, but he had. To obtain power and position, he wanted to have another woman other than her.

When had Ning Meng Yao fall to this degree?

“Yao’er, listen to me. I love you, but it’s just that…” Looking at Ning Meng Yao’s eyes that were slowly turning cold, Ling Luo walked up to her and grabbed her arm, anxiously trying to explain.

“Love? Ling Luo, the one who doesn’t deserve to speak about love is you. You say you love me? But you love power and position above all else. To think that you still do not know me. Asking me to share the man I like with other women, that’s just impossible; I have my own pride,” Ning Meng Yao snatched her hand back and said coldly.

Ling Luo looked at the hand that she had kept away and his body turned somewhat stiff. “Yao’er, why are you being like this? Polygamy is normal here.”

The pupils in Ning Meng Yao’s eyes shrunk as she looked right at Ling Luo, “Polygamy? Normal? Then you should continue living the life you regard as normal; don’t come and bother me anymore.”

After spitting those words out, Ning Meng Yao thought she was strong and wouldn’t feel sad, but when she heard her own words out loud, her heart ached to the point she was having difficulty breathing.

She was unfortunate. Since when did his thoughts begin to change, matching the pedantic and ignorant ideals of this era?

“Yao’er, why won’t you understand me? I’m just doing what’s best for us,” Ling Luo looked at Ning Meng Yao’s eyes that were becoming more unfeeling and his frustrations grew before he finally roared at her angrily.

Ning Meng Yao took a step forward at a time before raising her hand to deliver two heavy slaps on his cheeks. “What’s best for us? Ling Luo, you’re only thinking for yourself. From now on, we have no relations. The next time we meet, we are just strangers.”

She looked at Ling Luo deeply, her pair of eyes no longer having any affection for him and there was only an unfeeling coldness. Her long white cotton skirt fluttered against the wind, making her seem like a butterfly which landed lightly onto a flower.

Ling Luo covered his cheeks as his eyes watched Ning Meng Yao leave. He neither chased after her nor asked her to stay, but what he didn’t know was that his decision of letting her go would make them estranged forever.

Ning Meng Yao did not know how she managed to arrive back at home. She was at a loss while she looked at her small and delicate courtyard.

Looking at it, Ning Meng Yao laughed to herself. She thought he would always be by her side, just like how she had wished. But now, it seemed that reality slapped her good in the face.
