Alice Willer received an anonymous phone call from a child after her husband went missing.  The only way for her to find answers was to journey into her unspoken past.

Eighteen years ago, Alice was diagnosed with a severe depression after her pet dog’s accidental death.  Suggested by her doctor, her parents decided to send her on a long trip with her brother Travis to Japan to cope with her illness.

There, she encountered a poor old lady, Mother Turtle, who claimed Alice was special, and Alice was the one who would find the Gatekeeper who vanished for half a century.  Alice didn’t believe Mother Turtle until she made friend with Fung, a young mistress who could speak to the spirits.  Amazed, Alice found out she had potential to be a spirit host herself.

The battle between the Gatekeeper and the demons caused a devastating earthquake struck to paralyze the city, Alice and Mother Turtle became refugees who drifted into a relief camp.  This was when Alice found out Mother Turtle and the Gatekeeper used to be lovers.

In attempt to reunite the Gatekeeper and Mother Turtle, Alice decided to go look for the Gatekeeper in the highland of Kuju.  But Mother Turtle got badly injured when she tried to save Alice from the attack of demons.  The Gatekeeper took her to the immortal spring, and Mother Turtle still didn’t survive.  Furious, he set his course to retaliate against the demon leader and its brother.

After battles, the Gatekeeper took Alice and Fung to a remote cave to train them with his powers.  Alice and Fung realized the Gatekeeper was an immortal who didn’t age, and they were the chosen apprentices of his teachings.  Alice rejected the Gatekeeper.  Fung on the other hand turned evil during training.  When the Gatekeeper tried to save Alice from Fung’s evil spells, they became intimate and had a love child named Danny.

The couple and the infant lived near Mother Turtle’s resting place, where the Gatekeeper visited daily.  The simple family life ended when one day Alice discovered Mother Turtle had come back to life, and the demons had also found them.  As the demons invaded Alice’s home, the Gatekeeper had to be left behind for Alice to escape with Danny.  With great sadness, Alice gave Danny to Mother Turtle, so the demons couldn’t find him.  Then she went back to America on her own.

Years later in New York city, Alice lived in the wealthy part of suburb and hid her identity under the guise of being a regular housewife.  When her husband went missing, she knew it had something to do with the demons from her past.  She decided to go back to Japan to reclaim Danny and her duty as the protector of the light.
