Flashback..
“Bleghh……”
The 6 years old Eugene couldn’t control her nausea any longer and so the tiny little muffin she got for her birthday quickly came back up through her esophagus and with no ability to hold it down threw up all over the cold hard floor of her cell.
‘I can’t breathe!’
Eugene was kneeling, spewing out everything she ate until no longer being able to vomit out anything else. The smell of acid in her throat was so pungent making it painful for her to breathe and to stay conscious.
She was repeatedly beaten up, and no amount of beggings would ever go through to the person in front of her.
‘Whyy….’
A question she asked her whole life. Why me?
During bright hours, she was allowed to go to school, but when night comes, she had to be locked inside the cold unground cell for at least a few hours per day. Eventually, becoming her only private space and a place she would call home. The people above called it a ‘Personal Study Area’. Where she had nothing, but her school supplies, a small desk, and a chair. They told her, this was what every woman in the family went through.
But Eugene wasn’t stupid, with the personal study time everyday and proper education she was able to discern that what her family was telling her was actually all lies. Everyone goes through the same thing? No. This wasn’t normal. Child abuse.
That was what she studied in class today. She knew she was different from everyone else and today’s lesson very much confirmed it. Child abuse. But of all days, she had to study it today. The date of her birth.
Every year, the whole family would come together for a celebration. Not for Eugene, but for her grandmother. Eugene and her grandmother share the same birth date and it was also the only day every year where she did not need to do any ‘Personal Study’.
“Did you know what you did wrong?”
Her grandmother asked Eugene, constantly jabbing her on the forehead with her crane.
“Just the very fact that you were born was even wrong, and the fact that you just had to be a female on top of that”
Her grandmother made sure Eugene understood clearly, putting accents on each word.
“Useless thing, child abuse? You’ve got my blood and that’s justification for all our actions! Not. child. abuse! How dare you even question your discipline! WHY WERE YOU EVEN BORN!”
“Don’t you dare show your face in front of me ever again!”
Her grandmother was usually a person of few words and this was the first time she had heard more than 2 sentences from her. The norm would be, beating Eugene without saying anything, and hitting her until she was semi-conscious,
The reason as to how she came to know the word child abuse was because of the awareness lesson she got today at school. And being a 6-year-old, curiosity got to her. When the whole family was downstairs celebrating the birth of her grandmother, she was locked inside her bedroom. Therefore she thought she was going to be left alone, and took that chance to lookup more about child abuse and how to prevent such things. Little did she know, whatever she did, she was always monitored. Her laptop and cellphone sends alarms to her family if she searches up specific words that are banned.. In this case, Child abuse.
So afterward, she was dragged to her underground cell and was beaten up and left there without food and water for 2 days.

Lying there on the cold hard floor with tears that had formed into crusts on her face, she started to feel nothing no more. That was the day she lost an emotion called Pain. It was also the day where, corporal punishments would be harsher than before.
The only emotions she would experience onwards were hatred for people who would inflict mental and physical pain onto her. Even towards family members that wouldn’t do anything but watch, she hated them. But all this would last until she turned 8. Where her last emotion would also die down.
This memory would frequently visit her as a dream in her past life. Never in her whole world would she think that she would meet a replica of her grandmother here. The cause of her suffering and someone she never wanted to meet again. But as fate hated people, the replica was Moniqua’s mother…
