Chapter 1, Ellius

Ellius, or El as he would have you call him was a quiet boy. This was due in large part to his father, who he seemed to take after quite a bit. Requille was consumed in his research whenever he had free time. If he wasn’t meeting with anyone or spending time with his family, you could always find him holed up in the basement. It was this conspicuous drive for research that allowed him to rise in power so quickly. With him teaching his son personally, El had awakened his affinities at the age of three and since then had been practicing and learning with his father.

At this moment he was only a second circle spell caster. Not far along, but for such an age it was unheard of. He was currently inside the library to research more on the basics and to try out his first spell, not just messing around with mana. Although with the sheer size of the library it would take some time before he found the right book. The library was put near the main courtyard at the back of the castle. With a milky white dome ceiling and blueish lighting, the giant bookshelves were lined up in front of him. Although the bookshelves were made of wood, they were white in color and shined almost like metal.

“Let’s see….. Where is the basic spell tome…”

Reaching the book using one of the many ladders attached to the walls he promptly sat where he was and started reading.

‘Through hundred of years of studying the runes of old and the complex spells the god of Spells blessed us with, humanity has developed a system of the rune and spell writing called etching. Each rune with the minimum amount of power and will behind it can create the spells one sees today. Stringing more runes together in complex shapes will create a more powerful spell.’

‘First, utilizing a string of mana and with the will to materialize it a spell caster can write runes in front of him or if more advanced, within one’s own soul. To help with this step, one can make hand signs or chants.’

‘Secondly, by filling in the missing mana the rune will energize.’

‘And finally, by activating the rune by either acting out a movement or calling out its name, the rune’s effect will occur. If one were to make more complex patterns by concealing runes within different shapes, most commonly a circle. Each of the effects will combine into a new spell. ‘

With such steps laid out in front of him, El promptly raised his hand and started casting. With his previous experience messing with mana, he quickly made the rune for frost in the air using the hand signs his father taught him. First, his two hands clenched in prayer and a twisting motion of his palms. Soon after he reached out with his hand and a small rune floated gently. Even though it was just this much El was extremely excited. This was his first time actually using magic and he could already feel the slight chill coming from the rune.

‘It’s just as amazing as I thought it would be!’

Due to his concentration waning the rune started to fade away. “NO WAIT!” he thought, but it was already gone.

“I’m an idiot…Let’s try that again.”

Repeating the steps once again but with more concentration, he got the rune in his hand, before pushing a tiny amount of mana. Slowly it started to glow with a radiance akin to a flame.

“Frost Pulse!”

The ground and the bookshelves around him were washed over by a light blue glow before being coated in ice. It was simple magic, not even that powerful as it only covered a 5-foot radius, but it was magic nonetheless. Excited about his new skill he sought out his father in hopes of learning more. However, he quickly realized that the new floor of ice was hard to step on and crashed headfirst into nearest the shelf.
