Chapter 13: Beating Heart

“Mother, if there is delicious food in the future, we should eat together. Don’t be hesitant.” Su Mian also scooped some for Su Jiang Hai, “Father, you should also have some.”

Su Mian only ate a bowl of rice and did not feel like eating anymore.

In her past life, she had eaten a lot better food in the Imperial Prison compared to her home now.

After eating, someone came to see Su Jiang Hai and they left.

Su Jiang Hai was a carpenter. Today, he was going to old Gao’s house to set up the roof.

The houses at this era were built with 6-8 wooden beams fastened from one end of the ceiling to the other. Between two large beams, there would be two smaller beams placed between on each end. Finally, they would put woven reed mats on top, a layer of earth, and then trod.

This reminded Su Mian that her father was a carpenter, and maybe she could make something out of that information.

Today was also the day to return her book. Su Mian pulled Su Jin Long along and rode on a donkey cart from the village to the county. She wanted to go borrow more books and buy some college entrance exam review materials.

As there was a huge snowfall the night before, Su Jin Long originally  planned with Su Jin Biao to go catch rabbits. In the end, he was pulled along by Su Mian to go to the city, causing him to be super unhappy.

The city library was not big and only had a single floor. When Su Jin Long saw the collection of books, he felt his head hurt. He would rather stay outside the library than go inside even with the cold winds blowing at the door.

At this moment, a squad of soldiers marched past him with strong and healthy strides. They were even shouting out the army’s slogan: “Respect the law. Protect the citizens’ safety!”

That immediately attracted Su Jin Long’s attention.

Su Jin Long felt his blood racing as he looked at their impressive appearance and imposing air while in their uniforms. They were the real soldiers who protected the citizens.

Old Ji family’s Ji Xiao Guo who ignored his proper duties all day long truly deserved to be sent home.

Su Jin Long’s eyes were focused on them and he tiptoed to watch them until they were no longer in his sight.

Su Mian finished picking the books and walked over to him. She saw Su Jin Long looking ahead with his eyes never blinking as he clinged to the stone lion in front of the door. When she glanced over and saw the backs of the soldiers, she asked, “What are you looking at?”

“Sister, my heart is beating.”

“If your heart isn’t beating, then you’d be dead!”

“I’m saying that I might have found my passion.”

“Oh. Is it to catch rabbits or fight wild chickens?”

“I want to become a soldier.”

Su Mian looked at Su Jin Long from head to toes.

Su Jin Long felt as if he was being inspected by an officer. His body stood straight with his feet 90 degrees apart.

In the end, Su Mian rolled her eyes, “You are too skinny, they won’t want you!”

Su Mian might have said that, but she was secretly happy.

In her previous life, Su Jin Long might not have seen the soldiers before. Now that he had seen them in this lifetime, he began to have ideas of becoming a soldier.

Thus the story: Mother Meng moved house three times. Influence was an important factor.

“I’m still young. From now on, I will eat more and train my body!”

On the way back, Su Jin Long was mumbling on and on about how he wanted to become a soldier. He even drew up a workout plan and told himself that he would go ask Su Hong how he should prepare himself.

Su Mian did not know whether to laugh or cry. Who knew how many days his enthusiasm could last, but becoming a soldier was a good decision.

When both of them made it home, the sun was already setting. At night, Su Jiang Hai ate at the Gao family’s house. He Qin used three eggs to make soybean paste and stir-fried a white radish with dipping sauce for their dinner.

It was rare for Su Jin Long to not be picky about his food. When he ate five bowls of rice, He Qin thought that he had become sick and checked his body temperature. She touched his forehead and compared it to her own temperature. Of course, he had no fever.

A male going through puberty ate a lot. Su Mian was smiling on the inside, “Mother, he isn’t sick. He had grown from being a picky eater. In the future, he will eat a lot.”

With their family being poor and food being unappetizing, Su Jin Long had become a picky eater. In the past, he would only eat two bowls of rice and pretend he was full.

He Qin suddenly felt sad and blamed herself and Su Jiang Hai’s inability to provide. If their family situation was better, Xiao Long would have been able to grow up better. Would he be like what he was now? Not only was he short, he was thin as a hemp stalk.

After turning off the lights, Su Mian quickly entered the tower space.

The seeds had finally sprouted on the medicinal field. They were small, thin, and tender, and they would bend when the wind blew. Su Mian carefully walked over, afraid she might accidentally step on them.

Su Mian treasured them like her own children. This was something she personally cultivated all by herself.

The sprouts were only one centimeter tall, so Su Mian could not see much. She then went to get some water and carefully watered them again. She even moved those that had grown too densely together into another row. Now, there were two rows in the medicinal field.

Su Mian felt there was potential in her plants.

Now, she was most curious about what sort of medicinal plant she had planted.
