The jeep drove for more than four hours before reaching the eastern edge of Apricot Village. All the roads in Apricot Village were dirt roads and while they were fine for the usual donkey carts, the military jeep would not be able to enter at all.
Fortunately, Su Mian’s house was located at the edge of the village. The second team leader stopped the car and Wei Zhen Hui jumped nimbly out of the co-driver seat and headed to the rear of the car.
Knowing that he was going to carry Su Mian, Su Jin Long stepped forward, “Let me carry her, I am quite strong.”
Wei Zhen Hui had already opened the car door. He leaned down into the car and emerged with Su Mian in his arms, “You lead the way.”
Su Jin Long seemed to want to say something, but the second team leader held him back, “Boy, do not forget the instructor’s word.”
Su Jin Long looked dumbfounded. Before the troops had set off, Instructor Wu had told him that as long as he helped their captain marry, he would be able to serve as a soldier in three years time.
How was he going to help Wei Zhen Hui marry? He was not his father or mother.
Along the way, Su Jin Long racked his brains, thinking of all the unmarried young women in the village who were of the right age. After much deliberation, he felt that his cousin, Su Hong, was the most suitable.
The jeep was 500m away from Su Mian’s house. Su Jin Long ran quickly home, shouting as he went, “Father, mother, sister and I are home, we are home!”
It was just after noon and there were many people walking around the village after eating dinner.
When Su Jin Long shouted these words, they could be heard from several streets away.
This brat!
Since he had shouted, everyone in the village knew. Su Mian closed her eyes embarrassedly, then secretly opened them a crack. Seeing that Wei Zhen Hui had glanced at her, she quickly turned her gaze away again.
“Oh, what happened to Su Mian, she is being carried back!” Xiao Gao’s wife saw the soldier coming from far away, carrying a person that she could only recognise when she was close enough. Su Mian had saved their fifth child, however, a little gossip would not kill anybody and it was not like she was doing something wrong.
“It really is Su Mian. Tsk, it is broad daylight and she doesn’t know what to avoid. How can she marry in the future?” Another married young woman tsked twice and spat out a mouthful of saliva, stamping it into the ground with her foot after.
“I had heard that Su Mian had not been home for a few days. It was said that she was taken by a few soldiers to see patients, but she came back sick herself?”
“They said she went to see patients, but who knows what really happened?”
The words after that were even more unpleasant to the ears. Wei Zhen Hui turned a deaf ear and strode forward while carrying Su Mian.
The second team leader followed behind, secretly praising the captain for having such a good heart. People were saying such bad things. If it were him, he would have dropped Su Mian on the ground out of embarrassment.
At this time, many people had gathered around in the street to watch them with excitement.
However, because of Wei Zhen Hui’s icy aura, they simply watched on from afar.
Su Mian had lived for so long in her previous life, so she knew that wherever there were women, word would travel. Who knew what the people in the village may say of them tomorrow! She struggled, wanting to walk on her own, but Wei Zhen Hui held her even tighter.
He Qin and Su Jiang Hai had been worried to death for the past two days. They did not know where to ask about this and did know know anyone they could ask. They came out when they heard Su Jin Long’s voice.
Seeing her parents, Su Mian blushed and turned her head away. Being carried like this, she did not know how she could face anyone ever again.
Wei Zhen Hui let out a low laugh, then carried her into the house and put her on the heated brick bed.
When He Qin saw Su Mian being carried by someone, her heart sank, thinking that she might have become sick with something. Seeing the thick gauze wrapped around her ankle, her eyes immediately reddened, “Xiao Mian, what happened?”
“Mother, I am alright, it will be fine after a few days.” Su Mian was afraid that He Qin would worry, so she did not tell her that she was bitten by a wolf.
Su Jiang Hai had a slight recollection of Wei Zhen Hui. Wei Zhen Hui had only been 18 when he left and although his appearance had not changed, he still stared for a while before he could recognise him. He said coldly, “Captain Wei.”
