Chapter 16: Ghost’s Signal (2)

Fatty’s small pair of eyes scanned the surroundings, wanting to find some clues.

Xiao Bei slightly bent down and slowly took out the dagger that was strapped to his leg. He dared not do it too quickly as he was worried that the sound might be drowned in his movement till it became inaudible. This would undoubtedly be a dangerous move.

“Perhaps your guess might be right.” Silence lasted for awhile before fatty slowly agreed but his fingers had already touched upon the safety switch of the gun.

“È?” Xiao Bei was stunned.

Really? Is it really haunted? How could a broken radio be here?! However, Xiao Bei was very clear that fatty’s mind was not addled and he was not the type to make jokes.

Xiao Bei remembered a frightening story and that story was called——Ghost’s Signal.

But, the moment when Xiao Bei raised his head, he understood.

Because he saw Xing Man Tian’s belongings were messily scattered on the ground; yes, messily; but, at least it could be understood that this was not done on purpose.

One could imagine the circumstances at that time. Xing Man Tian hurriedly entered the water as there was something chasing after him. He was not ready but was compelled to jump in. In that case, exactly what was it that was chasing behind him?

Xiao Bei looked at the ground. Who knew what he was thinking about. Fatty was alertly listening to find the source of the sound.

“Zī zī zī ~”

A hasty sound was reverberated. This was definitely not the same sound! Another sound had suddenly come, seemingly severing the previous one that had already filled the environment; completely covering up.

Just when Xiao Bei was about to move a step, fatty stretched his hand to stop him.

“Come with me to this side!” Fatty did not explain and pulled Xiao Bei’s arm. This nearly caused Xiao Bei to fall from the pulling. Luckily, Xiao Bei’s reaction speed was fast enough which allowed him to avoid falling down.

Like this, fatty dragged Xiao Bei, bypassing the depression and went further in with quick steps.

Inside, right below a stalactite, was a pile of huge broken rocks that was covered by shadow and was using the wall as a support. It took the shape of a triangle.

They finally heard the first sound.

This pile of stones seemed to be done by humans, giving the piece of work a picturesque disorder. However, the strange thing was that there was neither entrance nor exit. The pile of stones gave the two a feeling that this was done to hide something but it just made it more conspicuous.

Xiao Bei and fatty immediately went to take action. They moved the broken stones and managed to dig out a cave.

Inside was really hollow!

Looking past the broken rocks and into the black hole, Xiao Bei’s heart started to speed up. The sound was still unhurried as it faintly echoed from the cave. That was strange and unexpected.

“Let’s move quickly. It seems like something is closing in on us.” The same time fatty spoke, the other sound’s frequency grew faster, now accompanied by the sound of flapping wings.

Is it a flying creature? Insect? But, he had never heard of any insect which could produce such loud sound, unless…Xiao Bei faintly felt that their trouble was getting bigger…unless it was a large amount of insects!

The hole was finally dug open and it could fit one person. As fatty’s body size was too big, Xiao Bei unhesitantly bent down and nimbly entered the hole.

Inside was pitch black and that radio static was nearby.

Xiao Bei wanted to ask fatty for something to light his way but there was not enough time.

“Take this.”

Fatty threw in an illuminating sphere and it turned out to be the gem that was inlaid on the wall of the tomb! How did he have this thing?

“Our electric power supply isn’t enough and the flashlight would not last till we exit, so I dug it out.” Fatty answered from the outside as he seemed to have read Xiao Bei’s worried thoughts.

Xiao Bei felt relieved. He picked up the gem and used the light of it to clearly see the surrounding.

Humans have the habit of observing from the top to the bottom and Xiao Bei certainly was no exception. As he was looking around, he seemed to have stepped on something which issued a kāchā sound.

Once Xiao Bei lowered his head to look, all his hair stood on end. He stood straight up and wanted to jump away but as originally the space inside wasn’t very big, Xiao Bei almost hit his head against the stone that was above him.

Right below his feet was a pile of skeletal remains. To put it more accurately, it was a pile of human skeletal remains.

“What’s in there?” Fatty asked from the outside. “Those things are coming, I can sense it, hurry!”

Fatty’s words suddenly stopped and for a long while, there was no sound coming from the outside.

“Brother fatty?” Xiao Bei called out to probe the outside.

“Curse it! Damn it!” Fatty’s voice allowed Xiao Bei to slightly feel relieved. He could not imagine his ending if fatty met an accident, leaving him alone.

Fatty squeezed his slightly obese body into the hole they two just opened up. The originally not too big space within the hole was now stuffed full. This caused Xiao Bei to unconsciously thought of the crowded subway scene.

“What happened outside?”

Fatty did not answer Xiao Bei and he did not look back. He only focused on moving a large piece of rock in front of the hole, blocking it. Once fatty had finished what he was doing, he turned his head and only then did he notice the deformed bones, damaged from him stepping on them.

Fatty was stunned for a moment. He slightly moved his feet to the side and murmured, “It’s so narrow here, packed like sardines!”

Following that, fatty devoutly shifted the skeletal remains to a side and said something in a low voice. Xiao Bei could not catch what was said but it must have been a grave robbers’ unique praying method.

During the process of shifting the skeletal remains, Xiao Bei noticed something was below. It was a small bag.

Like the shape of a backpack. Xiao Bei wanted to touch it but was worried that he might suffer a mishap. Hence, he looked at fatty as if to question. At this time, fatty had finished his prayer and said, “It may be something that belongs to this person.” After that, he once again turned to look at the skeletal remains and gave a sigh.

“I wonder if we are actually following in his footsteps. Boy, in the future, if you come across some skeletal remains, given the situation, would you please bury them? Though this can be said to be our community’s unwritten rules, it is also my request.” Although fatty just plainly stated it, Xiao Bei was aware that his words contained grief. “Who knows, maybe my ending would also be like this. Please, you have to bear in mind of this, considering we know each other, ok?”

Just as Xiao Bei was about to open his mouth, he was interrupted by fatty.

“Xū, can you hear something from the outside?” Fatty placed his index finger on his lips, speaking in a hushed tone.

That high frequency vibration suddenly sounded from outside, causing them to feel dizzy and nauseous. Xiao Bei now then remembered that fatty must have met danger so he had no choice but to hide in here. Xing Man Tian might also had been forced to escape into the depression by that thing outside.

“What’s outside? Also, I can’t hear the sound that was inside here. Why are you suddenly acting so strangely?” Xiao Bei felt that fatty’s every actions was particularly unusual, especially the tone he previously used, simply like he was giving his last words before death.

Fatty did not answer. He carefully brushed off the soil that was on the small bag.

Just as what Xiao Bei guessed, it was really a backpack. Due to the passing of time, the bag could no longer bear any pressure. When fatty lifted the bag, it completely split open, dropping a diary, a flashlight, a ballpoint pen and a bunch of keys.

The keys had already been rot out of shape but they were still not damaged. Who knew what they were for as some had a weird shape? Some were curved into a crescent. It was clear that these were not caused by external forces but they were originally shaped this way. There was a total of three keys, two had weird shapes and only one was a normal room key. There was a number on it.

Fatty took a look and threw it to Xiao Bei. Xiao Bei lifted the key near to his face to look. On the room key, there was a number ‘201’ on it. It had to be the room number.

Fatty did not bother Xiao Bei and went to fiddle with the flashlight but discovered that it was already dead.

“Want to know what is happening outside? Take this, I think there’s answer in it.” Fatty sighed and was particularly solemn, especially in this depressing environment.
