After Xiao Mei’s mother said that, everyone starts pointing accusing fingers to Zhuang Mei Ting. She looks around, bewildered, not understanding what they are talking about. She lowers her head again to mollify the little girl in her arms.
Seeing her mother like that, Zhuang Nai Nai’s heart really aches.
She steps out from the crowd before saying, “Mom!”
Her mother is stunned for a moment before her eyes light up. She lets go of Xiao Mei and walks over to her, tightly grasping her hands as though she is afraid she will leave, “Nai Nai, you are back!”
Once she is released, Xiao Mei runs to her own mother and cries.
After coaxing her mother, Zhuang Nai Nai apologizes to Xiao Mei and her mother. Since they are neighbours, the matter is let slide pretty easily.
Zhuang Nai Nai helps her mother walk back to their home as the crowd continues gossiping about them.
Their home is just as it used to be, small but homey.
Her mother has regained her sanity and is back to being her graceful and elegant self.
It has been years; although she is frequently sick, she has never brought anyone any trouble before.
Zhuang Nai Nai coaxes her to go to sleep. After she falls asleep, Zhuang Nai Nai stares at her mother’s sleeping face, her eyes watery.
Lin Xi Er who has been itching to ask her questions finally opens her mouth, “What happened, Nai Nai? Why did your father only took you and not your mother?”
When she hears that question, Zhuang Nai Nai tenses up.
