Chapter 14: Western Furniture

On the next day, Su Mian passed a book that she had borrowed from the library to Su Jiang Hai, “Father, I have a plan to make some money. I want to discuss it with you.”

Su Jiang Hai took the book and thought that his daughter was maturing and making her own decisions, so he wanted to hear her ideas.

Su Mian opened the book and Su Jiang Hai realized it was about furniture. The pictures of the furniture were different from the ones he usually made.

“Father, these are Western furniture. Do you think you can make them?”

“Western furniture? These white ones?”

Su Mian nodded her head. She knew that the houses in the northwestern village used trunks as furniture. In order to make them appear festive, those trunks would be colored red or orange.

As for those large and popular cabinets, they were largely painted orange too.

“Father, for generations, the village used trunks as furniture. Changing their idea would require some time, and a lot of people now don’t have much money.”

“But, everyone marries once in their lifetime. I think we can specialize in making marriage furniture. As long as they are reasonably priced, trendy, and practical, there’s sure to be people who’ll be willing to buy from us.”

“It’s soon to be the Lunar New Year. There will be many marriages held during the month. Young people are more likely to accept new things, so it’ll be a good opportunity to market white western furniture. We should make some for common use first and observe consumer acceptance. Then we’ll make more of those that sell well.”

Su Mian turned to another page, “This cabinet is made with sliding doors and will save space. It can also hold a lot of items and is much more practical. And for this cupboard, the one that we use is shorter with only one shelf, but this one has three shelves. You can also place wine and wine glasses on top.”

Su Jiang Hai carefully and thoughtfully flipped through the pages. His mind was like a firework exploding inside, opening up a new world.

His daughter’s plan wasn’t bad. There were already a lot of carpenters in their village, and they were old and traditional. Normally, there were not many tasks in the village for carpenters. In a year, there would only be a handful of people who got married and needed a house to be built. Moreover, those that helped were only given food, not a salary.

If they made furniture according to the book, they could sell the furniture in the county where there were more customers. They might even be able to truly earn some money.

Su Jiang Hai was a man of his word. In the afternoon, he brought Su Jin Long to their own family woodland to find wood that had already been dried.

Su Mian’s village was located close to a mountain. The wood allocated to every family would never run out all throughout the four seasons.

There were three sheds in the Su Family’s woodland. When the fireplace was fired up, the sheds would become warm. In those few days, Su Jiang Hai and Su Jin Long were repeatedly tossing wood to fill up the sheds.

There were no electric drills or saws, and nailing was done by hand, much less carving out the furniture.

Su Jin Long was at the age of curiosity. He followed closely behind Su Jiang Hai and even helped out at times.

He had what it took to be a carpenter. He quickly understood how to use a saw, and many other techniques without needing a second explanation.

Su Jiang Hai even wanted his son to become a carpenter. Hearing this, Su Jin Long immediately jumped and turned his back, “I am someone who wants to join the army!”

Su Jiang Hai laughed after hearing that.

He Qin went to send two bowls of hot water and couldn’t help but be happy hearing their conversation between father and son.

Those few days while Su Jiang Hai and Su Jin Long were doing carpentry at home. Su Mian’s medicinal plants had also grown a lot.

Su Mian would remove the weeds, catch bugs, and water the plants when she had time. By her efforts, the plants had already grown to one foot tall. The more the plants grew, Su Mian felt that they looked familiar, as if she had seen such plants before.

This continued until one morning. When she entered the tower space again, she almost fainted. She wished she could just tear down the worn-out medicine tower.

The plants that she planted were simply tomato plants. One stalk had three to five small lantern-like fruits.

What sort of lousy task is this? They are clearly playing around with me.

While Su Mian was furious, a row of words suddenly appeared in front of her.

Congratulations on finishing the mission. You are rewarded with 1 kindness point, a portion of baizhu and danggui seeds, a roll of medical-use gauze, and a pack of anti-inflammatory analgesic powder. Your next task is to search for a missing small white rabbit.

Ha, the mission rewards are so generous. This time, I have truly been given medicinal seeds and even earned kindness points.

Su Mian’s depression was swept away as she happily accepted the second request.

Su Mian’s effort to work on the field did not go to waste. Her current physical points had now reached 26.

She was now able to see ants from 20 meters away. She could even hear what people were saying from 100 meters away. These changes made Su Mian happy, making up for the trauma she received from the tomatoes.

When Su Mian planted the various seeds awarded to her, her physical points increased by 1 again.

Taking advantage of the mayor opening a town fair, she brought the tomatoes out of the tower space. There were two large baskets. If someone were to ask, she could just tell them that she bought it from the fair and no one would be suspicious.

He Qin sent half a basket of tomatoes to the Liu Family. She also sent the other half to Su Mian’s second uncle. After all, when Su Mian mentioned that she planned to take the college exams, her second uncle did not hesitate to give his support and keep a placement for her.

For the next few days, Su Mian had been eating stir-fried tomato with scrambled eggs for her meals. Even Su Jin Long, who loved eating, was green in the face. “Sister, what kind of disease did you cure for others to treat you so well?”

Su Mian, “…”
