She stood in her place unsteadily before stumbling backwards to the couch.
It was an indescribable feeling. Her entire body felt numb. She was stunned, she felt like she was going to lose her mind.
When she remembered her mother’s teaching, she forced herself to calm down. “Which ward is she at? What is her current condition? Is her life in danger? Does she need surgery? How much will it cost? Is the driver caught?”
The officer is momentarily stunned by her calm voice, “Your mother is still in the operating room. The driver managed to escape, but there is a CCTV video, so we will probably catch him soon. You will need to pay for the cost of the surgery.”
“Alright, I will immediately go over.”
Zhuang Nai Nai hung up on the call and quickly gathered all the money they had in the house. She also took the bank card with her to the hospital.
This felt like a bad dream.
She took a cab to the hospital, ignoring the astronomical fee it would cost her.
The light of the operating room was still on. There were two officers waiting outside the operating chamber, while doctors rushed in and out.
A nurse rushed out, “Is the patient’s family here? The patient lost too much blood and need blood transfusion. We need her family member to sign the approval!”
One of the officers anxiously took out his phone to call Zhuang Nai Nai, but Zhuang Nai Nai already rushed towards the nurse, “I am her daughter!”
The nurse looked at her, “Does she have a husband?”
Zhuang Nai Nai felt a little choked up, “I have no father.”
The nurse frowned, “Does she have a living parent?”
Zhuang Nai Nai shakes her head, “No, I am her only relative. Can I sign it instead?”
The nurse continued looking at her, “Are you of legal age?”
Zhuang Nai Nai sighed and quickly took out her ID, “I am of age, just a month over my 18th birthday!”
Zhuang Nai Nai signed the document that needed her signature and then watched as the nurse re-entered the operating room.
She stood there, staring at the light of the operating room. Her head felt numb, she could not bring herself to think properly.
Six hours later, the light of the operating room finally dimmed down.
A doctor walked out of there. Zhuang Nai Nai tensed up as she waited for what he was going to say.
She only had her mother in this world. She could not bear to lose her.
One of the officers asked, “How is the patient, doctor?”
The doctor took off his mask and said, “Her life is no longer in jeopardy.”
Zhuang Nai Nai’s legs softened when she heard that.
The doctor continued speaking, “But the patient has suffered from a head trauma that caused intercranial hemorrhage. The blood clot is not big, so we do not recommend craniotomy. The procedure is very risky.”
Zhuang Nai Nai could not understand what he was trying to say. “Is my mother going to die?”
The doctor shook his head, “No, a blood clot of this size will not endanger her life.”
“Will there be any after-effect?”
“We cannot know for sure until the patient wakes up. It usually does not affect the patient much, but like I said, we don’t know for sure until the patient herself wakes up,” the doctor said.
