Chapter 1, Warlock

A village on the edge of the kingdom of Iceborn that was once to the brim with people and energy now lay barren and abandoned. Due to the war with the neighboring kingdom of Faltston to the south, many of such villages were evacuated. While this village wasn’t in the way of any battles, the villagers were moved in case they got caught in the crossfire between mages. When they eventually moved back they were glad they had done so, as almost the entire village was destroyed. They were even more shocked to find out only two individuals fought here.

“Huff, god damn this-, man won’t get off my tail!”

A warlock whose eyes and hands were clad in lightning was flying across the plain at high speeds. Nearly reaching speeds capable of creating a sonic boom as he went. However not far behind was a small mass of flames, as a man in full knight’s armor and two swords chased after him. It shouldn’t have been possible to chase lightning users who were known for their unparalleled speed. However that was only if they were of the same stage, and it seemed the man clad in flames was more powerful.

“YOU WON’T GET AWAY!”

As if realizing the futility of such a chase the man clad in lightning stopped and turned around, casting a wave of lighting at his foe.

“Ah, did you finally run out of juice? Good, you won’t be able to escape this time. I hope to witness the power of the FAMOUS lightning warlock!”

In the previous battles, the warlock would run in and out of the front line making it impossible to catch him. However, he was finally able to catch him while he was repositioning and was able to push him away from the main army.

Quickly blocking the attack with his two blades the warrior smiled, “However I’m surprised that you actually turned to face me, the 2nd stage vs a 3rd stage, I know you’re almost ready to ascend to the third stage but there is still a wide gap between me and you!”

Saying so the man held his blades above his head and swung down, two giant pillars of flame following. The warlock utilizing his speed seemingly blinked to the side. The red flames gouged into the houses and ground creating a large crater where the warlock was standing just moments ago.

“Tch, this bastard”, Kicking off the ground with lightning spewing from his feet the warlock blasted into the sky and raised his hands. The space between his hands frothed with lightning.

“LIGHTNING COLUMN”

The sky seemed to light up as even the warlock’s body was completely consumed by the lightning. However the warrior simply took the full brunt of the blast with swords pointed toward the sky, “FLAME PILLAR” as he easily countered with a skill of his own. What he saw next was the last thing he would expect, the warlock was coming right at him.

Using the lightning surrounding his hands and his superior speed the warlock engaged in a melee with his enemy. Moving back and forth behind houses to evade larger attacks and using instant cast spells when he moved closer. The signature fighting style of all warlocks was displayed as he used any and all means to shower the battlefield with spells. Not only was he using all of his spell scrolls and items to hamper the enemy but even using any time he had between his attacks to write small magic traps on the roofs of buildings.

He was trying his hardest to defeat the enemy but was trying even harder to survive. Every time he came in melee range he was risking his life, as any attack could be lethal. One sword coming from his right, the other ready to counter any attacks, he ducked under one as the other was thrust forward. Using a quick blink he was able to close in the gap and he quickly thrust his arm forward, only to be met by a wall of flame forcing him back. His enemy wasn’t done yet however as another thrust followed by a diagonal slash was sent his way. The thrust he was able to quickly move out of the way of, but the diagonal slash hit his side. Thankfully he predicted its arc and created a shield but the brute force of the attack still sent him reeling back. He crashed through multiple houses before stopping, whatever robes and armor he was wearing were slowly melting away and a nasty gash appeared on his side. At this point, half of the village was gone and nothing would be left when they were done.

“It’s time to finish this!” saying so the warrior’s eyes suddenly seemed to glow as a mark reminiscent of the sun appeared on his forehead.

“THE SUN’S GLORY”

Not willing to die yet the warlock quickly chanted before activating his spell, “Cast from my body the energy of the sky, BRIGHTSTORM”

The clash of energy was so great that the front lines, miles away from this fight could see the sky light up with two different colors. One was off white while the other was a blinding gold. While they both claimed the sky the gold quickly started to consume the other.

“You’ve got nowhere to run now! DIE!”

The warlock was being pushed back and one could see the edges of his armor and robes slowly burn away. Suddenly the lightning that only covered his hands and eyes started to spread. His clothes seemed to wither and his skin peeled as a blinding amount of mana was found underneath. it looked as though his entire body had turned into pure energy. The warrior was surprised and temporarily blinded by the bright light that looked like a white sun. Before he could even open his eyes he felt a sharp pain as a hand clad in lightning burst through his armor and pierced his heart.

‘When did he become a third stage!’

“If you were wondering, I passed my trial a few weeks ago, I just acted like a second stage to catch you.”

“F***”

“Poor choice of last words…”

Looking at the face of his enemy the warlock placed his body on the ground, however, he could see the lips start to move.

“Huh?”

“Master En, are you awake?”

Waking up with a large jolt En looked around and found El in front of his desk looking up at him. Looking at the clock at the far wall of the study he saw that it was 2:00 o’ clock.

- my thoughts:
Warlocks in this world are different from dnd warlocks, they technically already have a contract with the bod of Spells. Warlocks in this world are simply spell casters who fought in the front lines using a mixture of martial arts and any spelling variant they can to survive. You can also think of them as mercenary wizards who will win a war for you as long you pay them.
